Nintendo 64 - A little more about this videogame   by Johan Krost

Nintendo 64 is the fifth generation video game console of Nintendo. Nintendo 64 is designed by using 32 bit and 64 bit microprocessors. Normally it is called as N64. This is the third product of Nintendo, which comes under the video game console category. Nintendo 64 was released on June, 23 1996 in Japan. There after it was launched to various parts of the world. In North America it was released on September 29, 1996 and in Europe and Australia it was launched on March 1, 1997. Finally, it was released in France on September 1, 1997. Initially it was released with only two games. These were super Mario-64 and pilotwings-64. Nintendo 64 is based on SGI system design. This project was completed by three organizations namely, Nintendo, silicon graphics and MIPS technologies. The first proposal for the development of this project was gone to the then chief executive officer of Sega, Mr. Tom Kalinske by silicon graphics. In the beginning of the development of Nintendo 64, it was given the code name project reality. And after few years, in 1994 it was known by the name Nintendo ultra-64.

The hardware of Nintendo 64 includes a central processing unit having the clock speed of 93.75 megahertz. The processor is connected to the other e system through a 32 bit data bus. There is a SGI co-processor provided with Nintendo 64, which performs all the graphics and audio functions of Nintendo 64. The main feature of this coprocessor is that it can decode any kind of music format and can play it. This co-processor is also called as reality co-processor. The last element of Nintendo 64's hardware is random access memory. Nintendo 64 was the primary to use the integrated memory subsystem. It has 4 megabytes of rambus RAM that can be expanded up to 8 megabytes. Nintendo 64 had the cartridge based games. Many of these cartridges had internal electrically erasable programmable ROM or RAM was provided with the battery back up so that the game can be stored or saved. And being the cartridge based video game console, Nintendo 64 had many advantages because, cartridges are not easy to duplicate and if they are pirated, then it will be an expensive work to do. Cartridges can load the game very fast as compared to discs. Some special support chips can be added to the console and the cartridges are durable than compact discs. However, cartridges do have many disadvantages.

The game controller of Nintendo 64 has six face keys, one analog stick, two shoulder keys, and one digital cross pad. Nintendo 64 is available in dark gray or nearly black color, and jungle green. The complete kit of Nintendo 64 includes a Nintendo 64 controller, controller pak, jumper pak, expansion pak, rumble pak, transfer pak, wild boy 64, voice recognition unit, cleaning kit, and radio frequency switch and modulator. However, a dance pad is also available with Nintendo 64 kit but only in Japan. These all are first party accessories.
